January 2018: Dr. Stephen Nadeau

ACORN Clinic announces Dr. Stephen Nadeau as the January 2018 Volunteer of the Month. Dr. Nadeau is a neurologist who has been volunteering his talents at ACORN clinic since the early 1990s.

Dr. Nadeau is just short of a Gainesville native, moving here at age 10. He completed both his medical school training and residency at The University of Florida. He is currently The Chief of Staff for Research and also on faculty at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center.

His service at the ACORN Clinic mainly involves assessing and following up with patients regarding neurological problems. Dr. Nadeau visits the ACORN clinic every three months and volunteers his services as a physician during the evening clinic times offered to patients.

Dr. Nadeau feels that neurology has a unique advantage over other medical specialties in that, “Because we can work mainly from the history a patient provides we can often come to the right conclusions about their condition without using diagnostic tests.” This advantage allows him to be able to assess the patient and start treatment all in one appointment. Testing can sometimes be hard to come by and bypassing this step allows him to save time and be able to help the most amount of people possible.

Dr. Nadeau feels a deep sense of desire to serve and donate his time to help people attain quality health care even if they cannot afford it. “If every physician donated a little of their free time to helping care for people in need we could meet the healthcare needs of the community.”

ACORN Clinic is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit serving over 20 Florida counties with full-service medical and dental clinics. ACORN Clinic provides high quality, affordable medical care, dental care, and social services by staff and volunteers. In partnership with educational institutions, ACORN Clinic also functions as an exemplary service-learning site for health professionals.
