Become a Volunteer

Having a full complement of both paid and volunteer staff is critical to providing affordable community based healthcare.

ACORN Clinic uses a broad range of volunteers from the community in North Central Florida to help fulfill the Clinic’s mission of providing affordable high-quality health care, dental care, and social services for our target audience of low-income, rural patients.

Our use of healthcare professionals includes: dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and others.

We are delighted to assist you in accessing appropriate volunteer opportunities wherever possible at ACORN. The clinic must meet requirements of outside funding and regulatory agencies.

For the Dental Clinic, dentists, hygienists and assistants are welcome and appreciated. Flexible scheduling is available.

How to Get Started

Those interested in volunteer services through the Dental Clinic are encouraged to contact Debra Mott at dmott@acornclinic.org. Please do not call, email only.

Pre-Dental Students

If you are a pre-dental student, a description and application can be downloaded below. The completed application and your resume can be emailed to Debra. Please do not call.

Pre-Dental Student volunteer Description

The ACORN Dental Clinic has opportunities for 10-12 pre-dental students each semester, who are interested in applying to dental school.

  • Volunteers must have chairside dental assisting experience – either from UF or private practice.  Shadowing/watching does not meet the requirement.
  • Commit for a minimum of one year and work ½ day per week is required. The schedule is adjusted each semester to meet the needs of our volunteers.
  • Morning shift is 8-12 am
  • Afternoon shift is 1-4 pm
  • We are open Monday through Thursday every week and every other Friday morning.
  • Any type of scrubs are fine to wear.

You will be working mostly as a dental assistant with the senior UF dental students rotating here treating patients, and/or helping the clinic in various capacities (making sterile packs, etc).

Keep in mind that the clinic is located ten miles out of Gainesville. The commute is about 30 minute from UF.
